BMW M4 CSL Colour Change with XPEL Satin Tarmac Grey PPF | Avid Group

When you purchase a car as special as the BMW M4 CSL, every detail matters. From the way it drives, to how it looks parked up, the whole package needs to feel right.
One of our customers recently took delivery of a new BMW M4 CSL finished from factory in Frozen Brooklyn Grey Metallic. While the CSL is already an incredibly special car, the owner felt the factory colour wasn’t quite the look he wanted. At the same time, this was not going to be a garage queen. His plan was to drive it properly, enjoy it on the road, and bring it along to our Avid Drive Events.
That created the perfect brief:
change the colour, protect the paint, and make sure the car was ready to be driven.
At Avid, we were able to offer a solution that achieved all three using the latest generation of XPEL Colour Paint Protection Film.
The Solution: XPEL Satin Tarmac Grey Colour PPF

For this project, we selected XPEL Satin Tarmac Grey, a satin metallic grey Paint Protection Film that completely transformed the look of the M4 CSL while still offering the performance and protection expected from a premium PPF installation.
Unlike a traditional vinyl wrap, this is not simply a cosmetic colour change. XPEL’s new colour PPF construction allows us to change the appearance of the vehicle while still providing the same protective benefits as a full gloss or satin clear PPF installation.
That means the owner gets the new colour he wanted, along with protection from:
- Stone chips
- Road rash
- Light scratches
- Bug splatter
- Track and spirited driving wear
- Everyday environmental damage
Most importantly, the film retains the self-healing top coat that XPEL Paint Protection Film is known for.

Why Colour PPF Is Different from a Vinyl Wrap
There are now a number of colour PPF products entering the market, but not all are constructed in the same way.
Many colour-change films use a laminated construction, often with a dry-apply vinyl-style adhesive and thinner polyurethane protection layers. While these products can provide a colour change, they do not always offer the same depth, finish, or long-term protection characteristics of a premium wet-apply PPF system.
XPEL has taken a different approach.
With XPEL Colour PPF, the colour pigments are infused into the polyurethane protection layer itself. Combined with a wet-apply adhesive system, this gives the film a level of depth and richness that looks much closer to a painted finish.
On this BMW M4 CSL, the Satin Tarmac Grey delivered a deep metallic satin appearance that suited the aggressive body shape perfectly. It gave the car a more purposeful, motorsport-inspired look while still feeling refined and factory-quality.

Full Colour Conversion: The Work Behind the Finish
A true colour conversion is far more involved than simply applying film to the outside panels.
To achieve the level of finish we expect at Avid, we disassembled key areas of the vehicle, including the front and rear bumpers and various exterior trims. This allowed us to wrap deeper into edges, openings, returns, and complex areas so the colour change appeared complete and seamless.
Because Paint Protection Film is thicker than traditional vinyl, there are some intricate areas where the main PPF material cannot reach or conform in the same way. In these areas, we used thin colour-matched vinyl inlays to ensure full visual coverage throughout the vehicle.
This extra preparation and detail work is what separates a high-end colour conversion from a basic wrap. The end result is a finish that looks intentional, complete, and worthy of a car like the M4 CSL.

Computer-Cut Templates with Extended Coverage

One of the key advantages of working with XPEL as an installer is the ability to use highly accurate computer-cut templates.
For this BMW M4 CSL, we used extended-coverage patterns that allow the film to wrap further around panel edges where possible. This gives a cleaner finish, improves coverage, and reduces the need for unnecessary trimming directly on the vehicle.
Using computer-cut templates also helps us install the film more efficiently and economically. Just as importantly, it allows us to lay the film in a way that correctly disperses tension across the panel.
Managing film tension is critical. Poor installation technique can place stress in the wrong areas, increasing the chance of lifting, distortion, or failure over time. By using the right patterns and installation method, we can achieve a cleaner result and a more durable finish.

Extra Protection for a Car That Will Be Driven
This M4 CSL is not being built to sit under lights. The owner wants to enjoy it properly, including on Avid Drive Events, so we took the protection a step further.
After the colour PPF was installed and sealed, we applied an additional layer of XPEL Stealth clear satin PPF to the high-impact areas of the vehicle.
This creates a sacrificial layer over the Satin Tarmac Grey colour PPF in the zones most likely to see wear and tear. For a car that will be driven, this is a smart way to add durability.
If those high-impact areas become damaged over time, the clear satin PPF can be replaced more quickly and cost-effectively without needing to remove and replace entire colour PPF panels.
It is a practical solution for owners who want to use their cars as intended while still keeping them looking their best.
BMW M Sport Pinstripes and Heritage Detail
To complete the look, we applied BMW M Sport pinstripes down the center of the vehicle.
This added a subtle pop of colour and helped tie the exterior finish into the BMW heritage badging on the car. The result is a tasteful motorsport-inspired detail that works with the CSL’s character without overpowering the new Satin Tarmac Grey finish.
The pinstriping gives the vehicle a more bespoke feel while still respecting the original BMW design language.

Finished with XPEL Fusion Satin Ceramic Coating
Once all the PPF work was complete, we coated the film with XPEL Fusion Satin Ceramic Coating.
This ceramic coating is specifically designed to bond to the satin Paint Protection Film. It helps maintain the satin finish while making the car easier to clean and care for.
The coating adds hydrophobic properties, meaning water, dirt, and road grime are less likely to cling to the surface. For a car that will see regular road use and spirited driving, this makes maintenance far more straightforward.
It also helps preserve the appearance of the satin finish, keeping the car looking sharp between washes.

The Final Result

The finished BMW M4 CSL is now completely transformed.
What started as a factory Frozen Brooklyn Grey Metallic car is now finished in XPEL Satin Tarmac Grey, with the added confidence of premium Paint Protection Film beneath the surface. The car has the colour, depth, and presence the owner wanted, while also being ready for real-world use.
This project is a great example of what modern colour PPF can offer. It is no longer a choice between a vinyl colour change or clear paint protection. With the latest XPEL Colour PPF technology, we can now deliver both.
For owners who want to personalise their vehicle while protecting it at the same time, colour PPF offers an ideal solution.
